BCD to celebrate Global Awareness Week - January 23rd - 27th

Celebration of Cultures Potluck – Wednesday, January 25th from 5:30pm – 7:30pm in the gymnasium
All BCD families are invited to share in an international potluck as we celebrate the cultural diversity of the BCD community. Bring a dish to share that represents your family’s heritage or an international dish your family likes to eat. Heck bring pizza! We don’t care - but don’t miss out on this year’s event.

Other fun ideas! Consider marking your dish with your family name, the country of origin (and flag), family member who passed the recipe down, family stories, etc. Not a chef? Well then bring other items to display and share such as: collections, family artwork, photos, artifacts, etc.

Musical entertainment will include both from talent within our community as well as outside musicians we have hired. The lineup includes 3rd grade students singing traditional Swedish songs with Mr. Parker, a professional bag piper, and Hawaiian ukulele playing by 8th grader Hoben Chargualaf.

Model United Nations – Thursday, January 26th
The Middle School Model UN will be held on Thursday, January 26th. All middle school students will join in this general assembly of the Model United Nations. In preparation, students investigate a country’s demographics, government, economy, and domestic and international issues. They then write resolutions from the perspective of their assigned nations. The preparation and work that contributes to this day are immense. Students learn about foreign relations, global issues, international conflicts, diplomacy and much more. Parents are encouraged to come view this event from 11:00am – Noon in the gymnasium.

Preschool Olympics – Friday, January 27th at 8:30am in the gymnasium
This annual tradition is a real crowd pleaser and an event that our entire community eagerly looks forward to seeing each year. Our Preschool students get a chance to show us their stuff as they represent various countries in Olympic sporting events. This year’s line-up includes: team relays, marathon, bobsled, rhythmic gymnastics, soccer, rowing, duathlon, and throwing sports. Below is a short video clip (only about 50 seconds) from a couple of years ago to help get you fired-up.

The opening ceremony begins with a dramatic Parade of Nations as the children march into the gym on Friday, January 27th at 8:30am with “torches.” Please mark your calendar and plan to join us!

Special Guest - Friday, February 3 from 1:45pm-2:30pm in the gymnasium
Liz Shropshire will be coming to BCD to speak to all members of the BCD community. Liz began the Shropshire Foundation in order to bring music education to countries impacted by war and conflict. Her mission is “teaching peace through music,” and during her presentation she will talk about her work in several countries and tell our students how they can get involved.
