"Model United Nations is an engaging, comprehensive middle school project in which students work in teams to research the domestic and international issues related to their assigned country. Incorporating awareness of current events, statistical research, and writing skills, students prepare resolutions and present them to their peers, who ask questions, debate, and vote on the resolutions. On Model UN day, several teams present their resolutions to the entire middle school, in a simulation of the UN General Assembly. In representing other countries, students learn to consider global issues from varying perspectives, and realize the benefits (and complexity) of diplomacy. They build skills in research, writing, presenting, working on a team, questioning, and critical thinking.
This year, students debated six resolutions about topics such as biodiversity, refugees, gang violence, and the war in Ukraine. These involved an enormous amount of research, which the students used to form questions, write formal statements, and determine their votes on the resolutions. They exhibited excellent critical thinking and inquiry! Over the three years that students participate in this project, their skills develop and sharpen, which is so exciting to witness. They gain expertise in writing, using in-text citations, forming and defending arguments, speaking and presenting in the microphone, maintaining a global perspective, and considering conflicting arguments when voting. Students begin the next chapter of their school careers with these tools to foster their success. We are so proud of their commitment to their learning and their accomplishments!"
