Birth Date Entry Requirement

We use the Boulder Valley School District September 30th date as a "guide" to make appropriate admissions decisions and determine if a child is ready for our programs.

For admission into our preschool program (3-year-olds) we are - in general - looking for children to be three by September 30th of the year of entry, or turn three within a few weeks of that date. We know that children develop at different rates and birth dates alone do not always determine developmental readiness. If a child applies who has a birth date within a few weeks of September 30th, we will we invite a family to bring their child in to meet with our Preschool Director for an informal assessment. However, this assessment appointment does not ensure enrollment acceptance into the school. We will also assess students as they turn three during the year, if we have room in our program.

A child's birth date is only one of the factors the admissions committee takes into consideration when making an admission decision. Careful thought and consideration is taken with all candidates.

It is sometimes recommended, for a child with a younger birthday, to have a "gift of a year" and remain in the preschool another year before entering our kindergarten program.

For Kindergarten admissions we again follow the September 30th date as a guide and younger applicants are assessed to determine readiness. Furthermore, we assess all applicants to BCD who are not already enrolled in BCD's pre-kindergarten program.

Admission FAQs

List of 7 frequently asked questions.

  • Is there an application deadline?

Boulder Country Day uses a rolling admission policy. This means that we will continue to receive applications until our classes are filled.  While there is no deadline, we encourage early application to ensure there is a spot. To find out if there are spaces available, please contact the Office of Admission at info@bouldercountryday.org.
  • How do I get my child into the wait pool for the next school year if you are full?

For the Pre-Kindergarten programs, the application date is one of the considerations that determines your child's placement in the program - the earlier you submit an application, the better chance you have of being admitted to the school. For other grades there are many considerations considered when taking a child out of our wait pool.  Because we do fill in many grades, early applications are always advised.
  • Once I submit an application, what is the next step?

For all grades, the Director of Admission will contact you to schedule a student assessment and/or a classroom shadow visit for your child. The shadow visits take place in the child's current grade level class for either half a day to a full day with the exception of Preschool and Pre-K. Those visit are typically two hours.  Also, teacher recommendation forms from the current teacher (Math and English for Middle School applicants), school records, and any test scores must be submitted to complete the application file.
  • Which grades require a student assessment?

A shadow visit is required of all applicants. Academic assessments are required only for Kindergarten through 8th grade applicants.
  • What is evaluated in the student assessment?

During its assessments, BCD is trying to determine if the applicant is ready for our learning environment and community. We want to ensure that if we admit the student, that they will thrive here. We assess each child's reading, writing, and math skills as well as various elements of social and emotional development. The goal is to assess "fit", both for BCD and the student.
  • How long does the assessment take?

    Assessments take approximately 1 hour.
  • When will I be notified if my child has been accepted?

Because we work on a rolling basis, families will typically be notified within two weeks of their child's application completion and shadow visit/assessment.
