There is something exciting happening in 4th grade!
Tanya Chargualaf
Every year in 4th grade we begin a project with the theme of discovery and learning about oneself that naturally becomes the theme for our year. It helps us discover what is most important to us. It also helps us learn more about who we are as individuals. We have been engaging in this work for the last week in writing and we can't wait to share our project with you. Below you will read a little description of what is known as the 4th grade project.
The idea of the project began with the work of artist Judy Gelles. She spent a number of years volunteering in schools around the world. What she found by simply asking 4th grades about their personal truths was profound and even life changing for her. She discovered that children are sensitive and perceptive and if we aren’t careful they can absorb the worries of the world. So she decided to create photo art with her findings. This project was an inspiration of what became the 4th grade project at BCD. Through this project we begin the year asking our student’s about their simple truths. What are their dreams? What do they worry about? What makes them happy? What are they afraid of? And many more.
We also incorporate our read aloud of the book Wonder by teaching our students that it is our Truths that make us who we are not our appearance. This project creates great community and inclusivity.
