Human Rights - Student Work from December 14, 2020

Each month on teacher collaboration days, students are presented with a menu of activity options for learning and engagement around an equity and inclusion related theme, which they are responsible for choosing from and completing. December’s focus on Human Rights urged students of all ages to consider the importance of these universal rights and freedoms and to express their own thoughts and feelings creatively through writing and illustrations. Our youngest learners in preschool had the option to watch one of three video picture book read alouds focusing on the ideas of being a community helper, what makes us feel peaceful, and being inclusive. They were then invited to draw a picture to identify or express these important ideas. Middle school students were asked to familiarize themselves with the Declaration of Human Rights (which were provided in a format created for young people by youthforhumanrights.org) and respond to one of the following prompts:
  • Describe how the loss of one human right would affect at least one other human right
  • Create a poster that illustrates the importance of a human right that you feel strongly about defending
  • Explain one way that you can take responsibility for other people’s freedom and well being under a specific human right
