Community Service
At BCD we hold our values Take Care of Ourselves and Others and Be Part of Something Bigger as central to the way we live our lives and operate our school.
Rooted in Our Mission
At Boulder Country Day, service learning isn’t just about giving back—it’s about shaping compassionate and empowered leaders. Our students learn that empathy and action go hand-in-hand, and that through community, even the smallest act can create meaningful change.
We understand that while our primary responsibility is supporting and growing our students, it is also our responsibility to care for our neighbors and actively engage with those living in Boulder County. We prioritize our collective well-being and take responsibility for our actions and the impact they have on others. Together, we contribute to an interconnected world.
BCD’s community service program has multiple parts. Students work directly with their teachers and engage in service linked to their curriculum. This could include projects in the classroom as well as field trips.
We also run school-wide programming for all of our community constituents - parents, students, and employees. These experiences vary in commitment but are focused on serving and supporting Boulder County non-profits.
Partnering with Community Food Share

Community Food Share (CFS)—the food bank serving Boulder County—continues to be our primary service partner. Through hands-on learning, students have deepened their understanding of food insecurity while actively working to address it.
-
Faculty and staff assemble birthday kits for families in need, bringing joy to local celebrations.
-
Students learn about hunger in Boulder County from CFS representatives and discussed meaningful ways to help.
-
6th graders lead a Fall Fest food drive (typically collecting over 400 pounds of donations.)
-
Bulldog Families—students across all grades—create heartfelt cards for food-insecure elders to accompany their weekly CFS deliveries.
Caring for Wildlife: A Multi-Grade Effort

YPS–5th grade students collaborated on a remarkable service-learning project benefiting the Greenwood Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
-
5th graders learned how to engage younger students through read-aloud sessions, then visited preschool classrooms to teach about caring for injured wildlife.
-
TK–2nd graders created rice socks for orphaned squirrels during science class.
-
In the Innovation Lab, elementary students worked with Tr. Roberts to build squirrel boxes and other needed structures—gaining both safety and design skills along the way.
-
5th graders personally delivered their creations to Greenwood, toured the facilities, and heard directly from staff how their work supports animal rehabilitation.
Parents write Letters for Care Letters
On November 17th, parents to joined us for an evening of meaningful connection and community. In partnership with Care Letters, a national nonprofit that sends personalized letters from “Santa” to terminally ill children, we gathered in the Commons for a night of writing hope and love.
Looking Ahead
Our momentum continues with even more opportunities for students (and parents!) to serve:
-
Middle Schoolers will volunteer in the Community Food Share warehouse.
-
Art with Impact: Ms. Bevins and Mr. Redmond are uploading student art to Artsonia, where families can order prints and keepsakes. Ten percent of proceeds will be donated to CFS by our students.
-
December Drives:
- 8th Grade will collect toiletry and emergency kits for Bridge House.
- 3rd Grade will organize a gently-used toy drive through Share-A-Gift.
