2nd grade puts a new twist on reading comprehension

Each reading group is given a book at the beginning of the week, and every member of the group is given one of five jobs (Leader, Word Wizard, Summarizer, Connector, or Questioner). Each "Literature Circle" job provides the group with a different perspective on the book that they are reading and gives students a singular focus for comprehension while reading independently. After reading and recording their parts/jobs, each second grader shares what they've written and the group summarizes the book together. This model helps them further develop their comprehension skills and gives small, manageable goals to each reader as they work on academic independence.
