Kersey Cares
Kersey Cares is the student service-learning program at BCD. This program connects students with local organizations as students contribute philanthropically, with in-kind donations and with time spent on service-learning field trips. Each grade level, Kindergarten through Eighth Grade, participates in at least one service-learning field trip during the school year. The focus of the program is cultivating empathy, building awareness, and pursing environmental and social justice. Students learn how volunteerism and the donation of goods and services directly benefit our community and the larger world.
The outcome of this work is the development of students who hold a community conscience, who are empathetic leaders, and who have a strong foundation in global and social awareness. Our non-profit partners vary by grade and service-learning trips correlate with classroom curriculum. This structure adds depth and breadth to the students’ involvement. Parents and guardians are welcome to volunteer on these trips.
For the 2021-22 school year, elementary service-learning will integrate with library time. Students will be introduced to basic concepts of philanthropy through literature and thoughtful discussions. Each until will build on previous concepts and help students develop the skills and knowledge needed to act in their communities.
Lower Elementary
In partnership with the Boulder County Parks and Open Space, BCD students in Kindergarten through 3rd grade form relationships with local rangers to learn about our unique western environment, animal habitats and provide a valuable service. The custom group projects enable our youngest students to be in very safe and supervised outdoor settings while measurably benefitting our beautiful parks and open space.
Upper Elementary
A partnership with There With Care allows BCD students in fourth and fifth grades opportunities to serve children their own age and build significant relationships with the program coordinators. BCD students support There With Care’s mission and provide a wide range of thoughtful and fundamental services to children and families during the critical phase of a medical crisis. Previous projects have included a Lego and book drive, creating Stuffy Story books, and partnering with a local retirement community to prepare and deliver snacks and meals for families of hospitalized children.
Middle School
Students in the middle school, while working within their advisory groups, identify areas of need both within the BCD and broader community. Using the Learning for Justice anti-bias framework, students will work to identify a need, examine diversity, work to promote justice, and be empowered to take action.
A partnership with Bridge House allows BCD students in sixth through eighth grades opportunities to serve Boulder’s homeless and working poor. In connection with Bridge House’s mission, BCD students address immediate survival needs of homeless and working poor individuals and provide resources which lead to employment, housing, personal stability, and healing. Projects include various collection programs to support the homeless, learning about fundraising within a non-profit organization, and baking to support Bridge House’s Ready To Work program and their Thanksgiving dinner.
Middle School Service Hours
Middle School students are required to complete 20 hours of community service outside of school. Students may choose service opportunities outside of school that are of interest to them or they may pursue opportunities at BCD.
Family Service Opportunities
EFAA – Emergency Family Assistance Association
Our Middle School Student Council runs a drive to support the food pantry at EFFAA.
In conjunction with the middle school’s liaison to Bridge House, BCD’s community comes together several times a year to prepare, serve dinner for those in need at the Bridge House’s Community Table.
In the spring, BCD families join forces for an outdoor project through Boulder County Parks and Open Space such as reforesting open space areas detrimentally affected by winter storms, flood reparation, etc.
