BIPOC Day of Affinity: a Growing Legacy of Impact

Boulder Country Day School was proud to host the Spring 2026 BIPOC Day of Affinity for independent middle school students, an event that continues to grow from a powerful student vision into a meaningful annual tradition.

At the heart of this initiative is Gavin Winters, a BCD alumnus and the original founder of the Day of Affinity. What began as his 8th Grade Capstone Project in 2023 has evolved into a vibrant, multi-school gathering designed to create space for BIPOC students to connect, share experiences, and feel a strong sense of belonging. Now a junior at Boulder High School, Gavin returned to campus to witness the continued impact of his idea and to share how meaningful it is to see his vision still thriving and expanding.

Students and chaperones from Colorado Academy, Dawson School, International School of Denver, The Logan School, and Montessori Academy of Colorado joined BCD for a day centered on connection, collaboration, and community. Through shared activities and conversations, students built relationships and strengthened their sense of identity in a supportive environment.

The day also included a keynote from Marina LaGrave, a Boulder County leader in sustainability and community engagement who focuses on advancing language access and culturally responsive programs, offering reflections that complemented the spirit of the gathering.

This event is a reflection of Boulder Country Day’s commitment to inclusion, belonging, and student agency. By empowering students like Gavin to lead with purpose, BCD creates opportunities for young people to shape their communities in ways that are both meaningful today and lasting for the future.
