Board of Trustees Elects New Members

Boulder Country Day’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce it elected five new members, each to serve three year terms beginning with the 2015-16 school year. BCD’s Board is self-perpetuating. It elects new trustees using a comprehensive matrix to determine the board composition. The matrix is comprised of a large number of important factors, including:

  • Skill Sets in specific fields, such as legal, finance, education, marketing, communications, real estate, entrepreneurial, and more.
  • Balance across divisions and grade levels.
  • Representatives from various BCD constituencies, such as parents, past parents, alumni, and members from the greater Boulder community.
  • Diversity in all its forms

The focus on each factor varies from year-to-year depending on the current make-up of the Board and its strategic needs. This year’s new trustees are:

  • Bing Howenstein is dad to Billy (8th grade), twins Paige and Libby (6th grade), and Bo (3rd grade). He and his family moved to Boulder from Los Angeles. Bing is founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of BackJoy, a company that creates and distributes innovative solutions to relieve and prevent back pain. Prior to founding BackJoy, Bing was co-founder and president of a Warner Bros.-based film production company and enjoyed a career in screen writing and television production. Bing’s entrepreneurial leadership, written skills, and financial experience will be important attributes for his work on our Board.
  • Marcie Lavigne is mom to Rowan (4th grade), Reese (3rd grade), and Paxton (soon to be preschool). She earned her first degree in mechanical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY, and worked at General Electric and Exxon Chemical following her graduation. Then, she shifted her focus to Medicine, earning her Doctor of Medicine from the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine. Since 2003 she has been a physician/owner of Coal Creek Family Medicine in Louisville, Colorado. Marcie brings her background in math/science along with her business perspective to our Board.
  • Ronni McCaffery is Head of School at Graland Country Day School in Denver. She was headed for law school almost four decades ago, but took a one-year teaching job and never stopped. Ronni has worked as a classroom teacher, a coach and in many different administrative positions. She has taught and led students on two continents (New York to London to Denver) and is excited to bring her passion, knowledge, and experience in education to the BCD Board.   We welcome Ronni as a non-parent trustee.
  • Shawn Rucks is dad to Zoe (2nd grade) and Aria (preschool). Shawn is president of ZOZO Investments (Boulder, CO) and Chairman of the Board of Deverus, Inc., a software company that is a leading provider of background check technology used in the U.S. Shawn brings an enthusiasm for strategy and execution to the board and will be instrumental in providing perspective for our strategic planning process.
  • Amanda Sessa is mom to Jackson (1st grade) and Samantha (3rd grade). She owns and operates SWBC Mortgage Corporation, a local firm that specializes in assisting current home owners and new home purchasers in acquiring residential home financing.  Amanda is passionate about education and brings first-hand knowledge about local and regional marketing and real estate trends. She will help us gain a better understanding of current market conditions as we continue to define our school and its place in the greater Boulder community.

The entire Board would like to express its thanks and appreciation to the trustees who are rotating off the Board. They have led our school through multiple strategic initiatives, and their generosity and commitment to our community serve as a shining example of philanthropy, volunteerism, and engagement.

  • Jon Wittemyer, father of Sophia (7th grade) and current Board Chair
  • Joe Brooker, father of Sydney (7th grade) and Jack (5th grade) and former Board Chair
  • David Moll, father of Olivia (8th grade) and Evan (6th grade)
  • Eugenie Holbrook, mother of Carter (8th grade) and Kara (Class of 2010)

  • Andrew Davison, father of Chase (5th grade) and Lange (3rd grade)
