BCD History

School History

Boulder Country Day was founded as an independent day school for children in preschool through 8th grade in 1988. We offer our families a time tested and balanced liberal arts education that focuses on the development of the whole child.

In 1999, Boulder Country Day School relocated from its original location on a 1¼ acre site at 3800 Kalmia Avenue in Boulder to its current 5.5 acre campus located just northeast of downtown Boulder in Gunbarrel. The campus is adjacent to Twin Lakes Open Space, a 42 acre protected area that includes hiking trails that circle around two small lakes and abundant opportunities for bird watching.  Purpose built to fit the needs of our specific age groups, the facility includes separate preschool, elementary, and middle school classroom buildings, allowing each one to take on its own identity and provide a safe and welcoming environment that is tailored to the age range of students. Our campus also houses a full size gymnasium with a performance stage, music rooms, and pottery lab as well as a centrally located administration building, which houses a library, science lab, art room and a fully networked computer lab. In October of 1999, the students and parents of Boulder Country Day built a 9,000 square foot playground structure, which was designed by our students with the help of a playground architect.

Middle School Expansion

In December of 2009, we expanded our Middle School building with the addition of a second floor.  The expansion includes six additional classrooms, a state-of-the-art science lab, science deck, 8th grade lounge, and many more improvements.  Several of the first floor classrooms, director's office, activity room and teacher's workroom were enlarged as well.  We expanded the building from 6,251 square feet to 14,450 square feet.  In March of 2010, we dedicated and named the building "The Scott Alexander Middle School" in recognition of beloved former Middle School Director, Scott Alexander, who passed away in April, 2010.

BCD has gained recognition from key sources outside the school. In the summer of 2007, we were fully accredited by the Association of Colorado Independent Schools (ACIS). That accreditation is recognized by the State of Colorado and the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).  Also in the summer of 2007, BCD was authorized as a Middle Years Programme by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB – MYP).  Boulder Country Day is the only school in the state of Colorado that holds all three of these accreditations and approvals. In 1990, the IRS granted the school non-profit status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
