Community Service

Community Service
"From those to whom much is given, much is expected".

BCD has long been known as a generous and supportive community. By partnering with Community Food Share (CFS), and the various agencies it serves, BCD has a strong school-wide focus for its culture of giving. The school's emphasis is on service with various opportunities for families to volunteer together.

COMMUNITY FOOD SHARE

Targeted food drives:
Throughout the school year, classes conduct food drives for specific high-need items such as: peanut butter, soup, juices, canned fruit, tuna, stew/chili, pasta, cereal/oatmeal, and turkeys. The turkeys are collected during November and given directly to the Sister Carmen Center, a member agency. Parent volunteers deliver the turkeys daily to the Sister Carmen Center during the week of the turkey drive.

The other food drive items go to Community Food Share (CFS) which disseminates the food among its member agencies. Grade levels are responsible for the advertising, collecting, and boxing of the particular food.

BCD night at CFS... the 4th Tuesday of each month from 3:30 - 5:00
Families (parents and children ages 7 and older) can volunteer together at CFS in the warehouse helping sort, bag food, etc.

Plastic Bags
The preschool collects plastic bags during the whole year as CFS has a real need for them. The students collect the bags, inspect them for holes, make sure they are empty (no receipts, etc.), flatten/smooth them out, and lay them flat in boxes for delivery to CFS.

Field Trips
Each grade level Kindergarten - Eighth Grade participates in at least one service field trip during the school year. Field trips have included going to the CFS warehouse, making sandwiches and serving them at a shelter, assisting at a Head Start program, collecting then delivering food to a wild animal sanctuary, and assisting at various agencies that CFS serves. Parents volunteer to transport for most of the field trips.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SERVICE HOURS

Middle School students are required to do 20 hours of community service outside of school.
